The Aetts of The Elder Futhark
What is an Aett? An Aett is a division within the Elder Futhark consisting of eight runes. The Elder Futhark is traditionally divided into three Aetts, which are named Freyja's Aett, Hel's (or Heimdall's) Aett, and Tyr's Aett. These divisions carry more significance than mere groupings of Runes; they reflect meaningful connections and correlations among the Runes within each Aett, embodying deeper symbolic or structural relationships.
The Aetts are first seen in a set of jewelry dubbed the “Vadstena Bracteate,” which depicts the three Aetts being separated by dots and was dated to the fifth century. The concepts of Wyrd, örlog, and the Aetts resonate deeply with my practice and understanding of time; and we see how they play out within the Aetts. Wyrd, a Norse ideal closely associated with the concept of fate, represents the culmination of our actions, both past and present. Wyrd is not fixed or deterministic; it is fluid and subject to change. It can be influenced and reshaped through our Örlog, which encompasses all our past actions up to this point and has contributed to the Wyrd we currently experience. By engaging with our Örlog, we have the potential to alter our Wyrd.
When we embrace the path of growth, learning, and expansion, such as through working with the Runes; we shape a Wyrd that allows us to evolve beyond our previous selves. Conversely, a path of stagnation or refusal to grow works against this natural flow and may lead to regression.
The Web of Wyrd serves as a contemporary or neo-pagan symbol that visualizes how all individual Wyrds are interconnected within the cosmos. Often referred to as Skuld's net, it is seen as a tapestry woven by the Norns, Urd, Verandi, and Skuld. It depicts the intricate, spider-like network of interconnected destinies.
The sacred concept of Time, Wyrd, Örlog as they are shown in the Aetts bring forth profound truth that pulses at the very heart of existence. It is the echo of what has been, the living breath of what is, and the stirring call of what is destined to become. It is the relentless weaving of Wyrd and choice, unfolding through every passing moment, every action, every decision you make. Each Aett resonates deeply with these facets, reminding us that we are bound by the threads of the past, yet fiercely carving the path of the present, forging the future with our will. This is the sacred dance of time and destiny, an eternal, passionate voyage that beckons us to honor the forces shaping our very souls.
Freyja's Aett: The first Aett belongs to Freya, the revered Norse goddess whose many divine facets shine brightly, embodying so much more than the popular love, beauty, and fertility. She also has the attestation of the spinning Goddess and of the controversial Gullveig. This section of Runes calls us to open our hearts, to embrace love with passion and joy, and to revel in happiness and pure enjoyment. It speaks to the very essence of our physical presence and the depths of our emotions, stirring a deep connection to what we feel deep within. This Aett also resonates with beginnings; the creator’s spark, birth of new ideas, and the fertile ground of growth and transformation. It beckons us to reflect on who we were in the past and honor who we are now, anchoring us in the present moment with purpose and clarity.
The Runes here are the very foundation of what you need right now to move forward. Each Rune acts as a vital stepping stone, a building block in a grand ascent; like climbing a towering staircase towards greater understanding. In these initial steps, you are grasping essential lessons, truths that will strengthen and guide you on your journey. This knowledge is the seed of your future; it will blossom as you progress, fueling your growth with the fire of discovery and awakening.
Heimdall’s Aett: In the next Aett, we stand on the brink of transformation, awakening to a destiny far greater than anything we've known before. We are deeply immersed in the lessons that forge our very essence, guiding us toward our own transformations. Each Rune within this Aett is a powerful teacher, imparting truths that may be sharp and challenging yet are essential for our growth. They carve the path to our highest selves, demanding courage, resilience, and faith. As we journey through each Rune, we awaken a divine spark within us, a facet of our higher self that pulses fiercely in the present moment, alive and vibrant now, as we move from Rune to Rune in sacred succession. Together, these Runes weave a tapestry of evolution, propelling us toward our truest, most authentic selves with every step.
Tyr’s Aett: The last Aett is the culmination of all we have become, the luminous path that awaits if we've truly followed the Runes to their fullest, deepest truth. If you have courageously faced the shadows, embraced the painful lessons, and ascended through each level of initiation that every Rune calls forth, then you are witnessing the profound results of your unyielding effort. You are now reaping the benefits of every moment you've taken to forge a connection with these energies. This Aett draws you ever closer to the next version of yourself. It offers you a path forward.
