So you want to make a Rune set? (Blog)

Making Your Own Rune Set

“Do you know how to carve, do you know how to interpret, do you know how to colour, do you know how to question, do you know how to ask, do you know how to sacrifice, do you know how to dispatch, do you know how to slaughter?” Havamal v.144 Trans. Carolyne Larrington

I chose to place this section near the end of the book because my hope is that you'll be stirred to take these next steps with the Runes, to forge a genuine relationship with them that resonates within you; and frankly, it just makes sense. When it comes to creating your own set of Runes, the paths and methods reflect the creators themselves. WIth that said it's also time to pick what system you wish to create, much like your favorite starter “Pokémon:" will it be the Elder, the Younger, or the Futhorc? I’ve said it many times before, but it bears repeating: no one's journey will mirror another’s, and that’s the most beautiful part of this sacred process.

Many who work with Runes go through a rather ordinary, almost mundane process: selecting a branch, cutting the pieces, carving out the symbols in sequence. Then comes the ritual of consecration, steeped in magic, in which they invoke deeper energies. There's nothing wrong with this approach, but I believe you're selling yourself short by sticking to just that. Runes are vessels of magic; even if their origins seem purely linguistic, their essence is woven into the very fabric of the universe and our natural divine order. They are alive with potent, ancient power, waiting for you to awaken that magic from the very start.

Before we venture further: be gentle with yourself. Embrace patience and grace in this sacred act of creation. Allow yourself the gift of time, of making mistakes and yes, it’s perfectly okay to sketch out the Runes first, to guide your hand. Don’t worry about perfection: imperfections are part of the unique story you’re telling. What truly matters is the bond you build with the Runvættir (Spirits of the Runes) and with your own creation. Take breaks when needed. Enjoy a warm drink, a nourishing snack, something that grounds you and fuels you. If your medium feels intricate or stubborn, remember the process of creating your set can span days, and that’s nothing to fear.

Mediums/Materials: When it comes to materials we know thanks to Tacitus’ Germania the most traditional modern material is the wood of a fruit tree. But of course that's also not the only material to be used, natural elements especially hold an intrinsic connection to the vaettir (Spirits) and the abundant energies around us. And while these materials absolutely carry the essence of the natural world that can forge a powerful bond; I understand the harsh reality for many practitioners that not everyone has the means to harvest a branch, collect river stones, or find ethically sourced bones.

That reality doesn’t diminish your magic or your connection. I believe that the most vital material for your Rune set is what calls to your spirit, what you can access, and what you can work with from your heart. Even simple items like dollar store glass pebbles or ordinary rocks become powerful tools when infused with intention and reverence.

Popsicle sticks or index cards, humble as they are, can serve as your first offerings, your foundational tools. However these are merely starting points and not your only options. The world is brimming with possibilities: Various woods (though be cautious with woods like yew, always prioritize safety),

Stones Crystals, each one unique in energy and correspondences

Bones

Resin

Leather

Jewelry

Charms

Glass pebbles

Bottle caps,

and even metal blanks. These are just some of the multitudes of materials you may choose to carry your magic. Follow your intuition and be led by the Runvaettir.

Inks/Stains: Your medium is more than just a tool, it is the vessel that completes your Rune set's birth. What you choose to apply the Runes with is just as vital, if not more so, than the medium itself. Traditionally, blood has been the hallowed stain, forging an unbreakable bond that fosters a deep connection between you and your Runes. It is a symbol of life, power, and commitment, ensuring that your very energy flows into each etched symbol. If you decide to pursue this route, I urge you to take every necessary precaution and safeguard your well-being. The amount of blood needed is tiny; just a drop or two mixed into your wood stain, oil, or paint can ignite a powerful union when coupled with a ritualistic process of creation.

While blood wields unparalleled strength and binding energy, it is not the only path, nor is it accessible to all. Alternatives abound: Incense ash

India ink

Fountain pen ink

Calligraphy ink

Wood stains

Varnishes

Paint pens

Nail polish

Various paints

And even the intricate artistry of engraving and pyrography. Some of these methods may call for a sealer; a layer of protection such as a clear coat or mineral oil to preserve the material and magic within. Polyurethane clear coats or linseed oil are favorites of mine. Choose your medium with passion, for each carries its own energy and correspondences and each holds the potential to channel your energy and intent into the very fabric of your Runes.

Tools and Equipment: When it comes to the tools and equipment you use, it’s deeply personal: it’s about what you, as the creator, have access to, what you are experienced with, and what calls to you. Embrace the journey of learning new skills with excitement and heart, for it’s beautifully empowering to bring your vision to life. I also must warn you to use tools that you are familiar with, or make sure to familiarize yourself with new tools before using them. Your safety and mastery are the foundation of every transformative ritual and creation you undertake.

Regarding the ritualistic essentials, like everything else mentioned they are versatile and open to your intuition. Feel free to include

Candles

Incense

Water—be it from the moon, the river, or the rain

Music that stirs your soul, your altar or workspace

Heartfelt offerings

Crystals Symbols of the elements

Invocations and offerings to the deities, spirits, or entities that resonate with you.

Oils that carry your intention and always, the necessary personal protective equipment. Never forget the importance of fire safety and careful practice.

With anticipation at its climax, it’s time to craft your Rune set. I offer my way as a template, something to guide you if you wish. But my deepest hope is that my words fuel your own unique inspiration, encouraging you to create in a way that is authentic and profoundly yours.

As we move on to the intimate act of creating the Rune set and subsequently its consecration and whether you decide to perform both pieces of the ritual together or separately, it's imperative to make sure the energy flows in harmony with your intent. For an example of what it looks like to create and consecrate as one practice I'd like to share what is the most common practice for me.

My space is cleansed, and as the music begins to vibrate through my being, I prepare my tools. I light the incense, uncap my oils, and pour offerings to invoke the divine and Runvættir. With heartfelt words of gratitude and invocation, I call forth the energy of the universe, the spirits, and the vaettir. I select my first blank medium, a blank canvas, and reach out to the Runvættir. Together, we choose the first Rune: this time Algiz. As I apply this Rune upon the surface, I channel the spirit of the mighty Elk, its noble antlers and silent strength. I speak of its ancient stories, its poems, its warnings, and its guardianship, and imbue it with the power of the divine energy surrounding me.

Next, I consecrate this Rune with my heartfelt voice whether I speak, sing, or meditate. As I do so I hold the Rune in my hands and pass it through the incense smoke bringing it before the appropriate offerings. My goal is to infuse it with the raw, vibrant power of myself, those Powers invoked and the Runvættir. After the Rune is brought before the offerings I seal it with oil, beeswax, or a clear coating, each application a gesture of gratitude, spoken and shown through my work; thanking the Rune for its presence, and its guidance. Placing it gently on its temporary cloth home, I prepare its compatriots. Each one a unique combination of the energies called and poured forth into them.

Consecrating Your Rune Set: Lastly we have arrived at that pivotal moment of completing your first Rune set, may this cement the bond between you and Rune as you pour part of yourself into the act of consecrating your Rune set. After all the time, effort, and intention you've invested in creating these from your chosen material, it’s only fitting that they receive the reverence and energy they deserve. Each book, each article, each intuitive whisper from your guides offers a different perspective; yet, what matters most is the love and raw connection you bring to this ritual. This section is but an echo of my own journey, knowing full well that every set, every Rune, is a unique reflection of its creator’s and the Runvaettirs design. When I consecrate a set for someone, I do each Rune individually, pouring my love and intention into each one as I craft them. The tools I gather: carving knives, rotary tools, inks, paints, blood are all part of my sacred ritual.

Step 1. Setting Up Your Sacred Space: If you're ready to consecrate immediately after crafting your set, then your work may begin now. But if divine timing calls you to wait, then honor that rhythm by cleansing and re-centering your space and tools anew. This is your sanctuary, to begin this transformation of chosen medium to a new companion and magical tool. Gather what resonates, it's okay to refer back to the material section for inspiration. If your journey involves using animal blood, approach it with reverence, practicing hygiene and PPE diligently. If you choose your own blood, do so with care, using proper tools like diabetic lancets, honoring both your body and the ritual.

I also can't stress enough that music plays a huge part in the ritual aspect for many including myself. Oftentimes music solidifies the memory of this intimate act, and imbues a special energy into the ritual; whether singing over your Runes or creating a flow that lifts your spirit into divine resonance. I'd also like to take this time and repeat that it is a very good idea to have a beverage nearby, a symbol of sustenance and reverence for yourself and your offerings. And lastly keep a receptacle ready to receive the finished Runes, as they now carry powerful energy.

Step 2. The Offerings: It's time to prepare your offerings, these personal sacrifices of gratitude and devotion. The divine entities you invoke will have their preferences; sometimes sweet, sometimes strong, based on your intuition and experience. Odin and Thor may favor hearty drinks, while Freya might delight in fragrant desserts. Make it personal. And never forget to give a special, dedicated offering to the Runvaettir, they have been your unwavering allies, honoring them encourages and thanks them for their full support and blessing. This is also the last moment for the ritual, if you wish to begin playing music.

Step 3. Consecration Time: Now begins a truly special moment, the culmination of your time, focus, and divine connection. As you dedicate each Rune, each symbol, to the energies you serve and worship, feel your connections grow stronger. With your space made yours, and the atmosphere infused with your intention and offerings are prepared with love and reverence, it is time to undergo the act of consecration.

Stand before your Runvættir offering, and recite the invocation you have created for them and then move on to the other offerings, calling forth each being you wish to invite into the ritual. With each word, with each verse, you summon the energy, the presence, the spirit of those you seek to include. When your invocation is complete, ignite incense or candles if you feel called, and let the flames and smoke become the bridge between worlds. Gently, with reverence, bring each Rune into the swirling smoke with both hands. As you do, speak or sing to it from the depths of your soul, asking that the energies of those you’ve invoked, if they resonate, flow into and empower the Rune. Repeat this sacred ritual with each Rune, offering your gratitude for their arrival and their participation. Once all have been consecrated, it’s time to gently close this sacred space. I like to thank my tools and ingredients, cleansing and storing them with care, honoring their role. Then, carefully place each Rune in its designated receptacle, expressing gratitude for their power and presence. Conclude the ritual by respectfully disposing of your offerings in a way that honors your practice. Lastly, cleanse your space and yourself, close the space with heartfelt thanks to all involved. Cleanse and ground once more, returning fully to yourself. And just like that, you are the proud owner of a handcrafted, consecrated Rune set. Let the feelings and pride that come forth fill you and every time you hold your Rune set, may that power and connection grow, burning brighter within you.
