A Fid of protection, safety and shielding Luis can be considered the Irish’ very own version of evil eye protection. Whatever may be attempting to cause us harm, Luis is the ward against it. This does not mean however, that we can just twiddle our thumbs after Luis makes itself known, but it's a call to work against the lurking danger that made Luis come forth in the first place. Complacency kills, and while things may not be that drastic, complacency can absolutely cause harm if we think we're invincible and don't take proper measures.
When paired, a sprig of Luis with its bright red berries, and clean white flowers, alongside a talisman with the Elder Futhark Rune Algiz makes a formidable ward for the home and self.
It's also from the physical attributes of Luis that we see another connection to the realm of Fairy. In several tales of Irish and Welsh mythology, whenever an animal of white fur and skin with red eyes (an albino animal) it appears in the path of a hero or royalty. These animals are called the beasts of the otherworld or Fairy as red and white are considered to be the color of the sidhe- Fairies.
With that connection in play, Luis is not only a potent protection symbol, but a tree with connections to witchcraft, magic, and the otherworldly beings of the Celtic nations.
